Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader from Gujarat, Dinsha Patel, has contradicted Rahul Gandhi’s recent claims that a section of the state’s Congress unit is working as ‘agents’ of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In an exclusive interaction with media agency, Patel not only distanced himself from Rahul’s remarks but also sought to clarify the situation.
“I do not agree with him because representatives from both parties are connected and collaborate for social welfare initiatives. For projects such as opening a dairy outlet or a bank, they often work together,” he stated.
Rahul Gandhi’s comments had stirred controversy within political circles. During his two-day visit to Gujarat, he urged the state Congress unit to remove BJP ‘sympathisers’ from its ranks in order to revitalise the party.
Addressing party workers, Rahul emphasised the need to support loyal members while sidelining those whose conduct and affiliations were questionable.
“There is a division in Gujarat leadership from the district level to block presidents. One set of leaders stand with the people and uphold Congress ideology in their hearts. The other set does not connect with the people and is in league with the BJP,” he had said.
His statement was widely perceived as a call to strengthen Congress’ electoral machinery ahead of the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections. However, it has left many state leaders disgruntled.
Dinsha Patel also spoke highly of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly commending him for constructing the Statue of Unity. He highlighted some of Modi’s qualities that make him respected by many.
“We respect and appreciate him for building the Statue of Unity. He is my friend. He maintains a good relationship with me, speaks well, and addresses me with respect. In that regard, everything is fine,” Patel said.
He also acknowledged that the BJP’s emphasis on the Statue of Unity was a significant move and suggested that Congress had overlooked its importance.
“Congress clearly missed on this count,” he added.
