While he is there, Jaishankar will also have one-on-one discussions with Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. The meeting continues the regular high-level talks between the two countries. Earlier this year, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri went to Moscow to meet with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko for discussions between the foreign offices, showing that the diplomatic talks between New Delhi and Moscow have been ongoing and steady.

The visit comes before a possible major meeting, as Russian President Vladimir Putin is planned to go to India after receiving an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
