Former Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud has been named a "distinguished professor" at National Law University . The move is being described as a major step for legal education in India.
In a landmark development, the university will also establish a Centre for Constitutional Studies, with Justice Chandrachud leading the research direction.
The Centre aims to become a hub for academic scholarship in constitutional law under his intellectual stewardship.
Speaking about the collaboration, NLU Delhi Vice-Chancellor Prof G S Bajpai said, "Justice Chandrachud's legacy in constitutional morality, transformative constitutionalism, and the dynamic interpretation of fundamental rights offers unparalleled empirical and doctrinal material for academic inquiry."
"We are profoundly honoured to welcome Dr Justice D Y Chandrachud, former Chief Justice of India, as a Distinguished Professor at National Law University Delhi," NLU Delhi said in its statement.
NLU Vice-Chancellor G S Bajpai called the move a key moment for legal academia. "This historic association marks a transformative chapter in Indian legal education, bringing one of our most progressive jurists to mentor the next generation of legal minds. Justice Chandrachud's presence will profoundly enrich our academic ecosystem," he said.
Under this collaboration, the university will set up a Centre for Constitutional Studies, where Justice Chandrachud will lead research work.
The partnership is expected to significantly strengthen NLU Delhi’s teaching and research initiatives, with a special focus on constitutional law.
Additionally, the university will launch a new lecture series, titled ‘In the Spirit of Justice: The DYC Distinguished Lecture Series’, starting in July 2025.
The series will critically engage with landmark judgments authored by the 50th Chief Justice of India, covering areas such as privacy rights, LGBTQ and equality, gender justice, digital freedoms, and judicial reforms through Justice Chandrachud’s interpretive lens.
As part of this collaboration, NLU Delhi will establish a Centre for Constitutional Studies, with Justice Chandrachud at the helm of its research direction.

The collaboration with NLU Delhi is expected to increase NLU Delhi's teaching and research initiatives and particularly contribute to constitutional law.
The series will engage with the 50th Chief Justice of India's (CJI) key authored landmark judgments on privacy, LGBTQ+ rights, gender justice, digital freedoms and judicial reforms, through his perspective.
