Days after three militants and two security forces personnel were killed in encounters in Jammu and Kashmir, another firefight broke out in the Kathua district of the Jammu region between terrorists  and security forces on Sunday, officials said.

This is the third encounter in two days as security forces have intensified the anti-terror operations in Jammu.

Meanwhile, last night’s encounter in Poonch ended on Sunday afternoon with one militant reportedly injured, officials said.

A patrolling party of J&K police came under intense fire from the militants at remote Nuknali Nallah in the Bani area of the Kathua district late on Sunday, officials added.

The party returned the fire, which triggered an encounter, as per the latest reports, an intense firefight was going on between the two sides.

Further reinforcements have been rushed to seal off the area to prevent the militants escaping from the encounter site, they informed.

Similarly, in Poonch officials said that the overnight encounter in the Pathanateer area near Gursai top in the Mendhar sub-division ended at around noon.

During the search operation, security forces found bloodstains near the encounter site, suggesting one of the militants had been injured.

They added that the security forces were still conducting combing operations in the area, although the encounter had now ended.

Acting on credible intelligence about the presence of some two to three militants in the area, a joint search operation was launched by the Army and J&K police late on Saturday evening.

Officials said that while the joint search team closed in on the location, the militants in hiding fired at security forces, triggering an encounter.

Intermittent firing continued till this afternoon. However, the operation has been called off as the  militants have escaped.
