First stormy Parliament monsoon session post Operation Sindoor

The opposition is gearing up to corner the government on multiple fronts, including US President Donald Trump's repeated claims of mediating a ceasefire with Pakistan and the ongoing revision of the Bihar voter list.

Monsoon Session to begin today; Opposition to target Operation Sindoor, Bihar SIR, AI 171 crash.

Intense clashes between the opposition and the government are anticipated during the Monsoon session of Parliament, which starts on Monday. Fireworks are also anticipated both inside and outside the House. There will be intense discussions and political sparring because this is the first session following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

The opposition, led by the Congress, is preparing to corner the government on a range of contentious issues. Chief among them are US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of having brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar—both of which have triggered political backlash.

Government sources have indicated that they are willing to hold discussions on key matters, including Operation Sindoor. However, the opposition is expected to focus sharply on the alleged security "lapses" that led to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people. The issue is set to take centre stage in the early days of the session.

On the legislative front, the government has lined up 17 bills for consideration and passage during the session, which will continue until August 21. Among these, a key demand from the Congress is the introduction of a bill to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. However, government sources suggest that such a bill is unlikely to gain traction in the current session.

PM Modi to set the tone

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the media ahead of the session, outlining the government's legislative agenda and policy priorities. His address will serve as a curtain-raiser, with many watching to see whether he responds to the opposition’s pointed questions on Trump’s remarks, the Pahalgam attack, and the Bihar voter list controversy.

The tone for the session was already previewed during an all-party meeting held over the weekend. Opposition leaders reportedly pressed for the Prime Minister’s response on Trump’s claims regarding mediation, the security failures leading to the Pahalgam attack, and the conduct of the Bihar voter list revision.

However, sources have indicated that PM Modi is unlikely to address these matters in the initial days of the session. Instead, the Prime Minister will be embarking on a three-day visit to the United Kingdom later this week, during which he is expected to sign a bilateral trade agreement. He is also scheduled to visit the Maldives during the same trip.

Government Seeks Opposition Cooperation

In an effort to ensure the smooth functioning of the House, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed for cooperation from the opposition. Speaking to reporters, Rijiju stated that the government is open to discussions on Operation Sindoor and emphasised that no subject is off the table. However, when questioned specifically about Trump’s ceasefire claims, he chose not to comment.

Instead, the government is expected to highlight its diplomatic efforts, including sending all-party delegations to different countries in the wake of the April 22 attack, and how it has handled cross-border tensions with Pakistan. These actions will probably be emphasised as a component of the government's larger security and foreign policy narrative.

All eyes will be on Parliament as the Monsoon session begins to see how the government handles these divisive discussions and whether it can advance its legislative agenda in the face of intensifying political pressure.
