In a verdict delivered on Wednesday, a sessions court in Palanpur town of Gujarat's Banaskantha district found former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt guilty in a drug seizure case dating back to 1996. The court is scheduled to announce the sentencing on Thursday afternoon.
Bhatt was convicted for falsely implicating a lawyer from Rajasthan by alleging that drugs were seized from a hotel room in Palanpur where the lawyer was staying in 1996. At the time, Bhatt was serving as the superintendent of police of Banaskantha district.
The Banaskantha police, under Bhatt's leadership, arrested the Rajasthan lawyer Sumersingh Rajpurohit under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act).
However, the Rajasthan police later stated that Rajpurohit had been wrongly implicated to pressure him into transferring a disputed property located in Pali, Rajasthan.
Former police inspector I B Vyas had petitioned the Gujarat High Court in 1999, seeking a thorough investigation into the case.
