On the eve of Republic Day, the Union Home Ministry announced that a total of 942 personnel from police, fire, and civil defence services have been honoured with gallantry and service medals for their exceptional dedication and courage.
The awards include 95 gallantry medals, presented to officers for their acts of bravery. Among the recipients are personnel deployed in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Northeast.
The Home Ministry’s statement detailed that 28 personnel from Left Wing Extremism zones, 28 from Jammu and Kashmir, and 36 from other regions received the prestigious gallantry medals for their courageous actions.
In addition to gallantry awards, the government also announced the recipients of 101 President's Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM).
Of these, 85 were awarded to police personnel, five to fire service personnel, seven to civil defence and home guard service, and four to correctional services.
Furthermore, 746 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) were conferred upon service members, including 634 police officers, 37 from fire services, 39 from civil defence and home guard services, and 36 from correctional services.
The Medal for Gallantry (GM) is awarded for acts of extraordinary bravery and self-sacrifice, often in saving lives or preventing crimes.
The President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) recognises a record of exceptional service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) acknowledges valuable contributions marked by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
