Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai has called for the state legislative assembly's monsoon session, which will start on July 21 and continue until August 8, as per an official notification that came out on Saturday.
This will be the tenth sitting of the ongoing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant following the 2022 state elections.
The move to cut the session to 15 working days has been condemned by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who charged that the government is reducing legislative proceedings in order to escape scrutiny.
Last year's monsoon session last 18 days, Alemao said, and the cut this year represents what he called an emerging trend of "undermining democracy and the voices of the people."
The summoning of the tenth session of the eighth legislative assembly for a period of just 15 days makes it clear that the government has found a way out of being exposed," he added. "I strongly condemn the BJP's move of cutting down assembly sittings just like its broken promises in the last three years.
Opposition leader also accused the truncated session as a move to divert attention from failures of the government in several areas such as Goa's financial situation and joblessness.
"We will reveal this corrupt government and reveal how it has also failed in governance," Alemao said.
Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar made it clear that the state cabinet had taken the decision on the schedule, after which the session was called by the governor.
