Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi formally assumed charge as the new president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday, marking a fresh phase for the party ahead of the 2026 state Assembly elections.
Gogoi succeeded Bhupen Kumar Borah, who was at the helm of the state unit for over three years. The official handover ceremony, held at the Assam Congress headquarters in Guwahati, was attended by senior party leaders, including AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh and Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia. Prior to taking office, Gogoi visited the revered Kamakhya temple to seek blessings for his new role.
Addressing reporters, Gogoi reiterated his commitment to the Congress party’s foundational values. “The Congress will remain guided by its ideals of equality and inclusiveness,” he said. He also paid tributes to the legacy of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and Congress leaders Jawaharlal Nehru, Hiteswar Saikia and his father, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, stating that the party would draw strength from their vision.
Gogoi’s appointment comes at a politically sensitive time, following a series of attacks directed at him by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma recently made controversial remarks targeting Gogoi’s British-born wife and alleged her links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, charges which were firmly denied by the Congress.
In a demonstration of grassroots support and party unity, Gogoi undertook a three-day padyatra from Sivasagar to Guwahati before his formal induction. Beginning on May 31, the procession made halts at Titabor, Jorhat, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Jagiroad, where Gogoi was warmly received by party workers.
As deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi now faces the formidable challenge of reviving the party’s presence in Assam amid ongoing internal restructuring and a strong BJP-led government under Chief Minister Sarma.
