Describing India as “uniquely positioned at this moment” in artificial intelligence, Sundar Pichai on Wednesday said Google would deepen its footprint in the country by building new subsea cables and expanding AI infrastructure under its $15 billion investment plan.

“India’s going to have an extraordinary trajectory with AI and we want to be a partner,” Pichai told reporters in New Delhi, adding that the country was already one of the largest markets for Google’s Gemini AI chatbot.

The announcement came as New Delhi hosted a major AI summit attended by global technology leaders. Google said it would construct three subsea cable routes connecting India with Singapore, South Africa and Australia, alongside four strategic fibre-optic routes linking the United States, India and parts of the Southern Hemisphere.

The project, under “America-India Connect”, will establish a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam, where Google is building its largest AI infrastructure hub outside the US. Mumbai will also be connected to Western Australia, enhancing network resilience and capacity.

“These investments will establish Vizag as a major international subsea gateway… and increase the resilience of India’s digital backbone,” the company said.

Beyond connectivity, Google will expand data centre capacity and cloud infrastructure to support AI model training, deployment and storage. The $15 billion investment, announced earlier, is aimed at building long-term foundational infrastructure rather than short-term product rollouts, supporting AI adoption across public and private sectors.

The company also unveiled a $30 million Global AI for Government Innovation Impact Challenge and a $30 million AI for Science Impact Challenge. Google DeepMind will partner with Indian institutions, including collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, to set up a Google Center for Climate Technology focused on AI-driven climate research.

Meanwhile, Nvidia announced partnerships with Indian cloud firms to deploy advanced processors for AI data centres.
