Addressing the media today, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed that the NEET-UG re-examination is set for 21 June. This follows the government's grim conclusion that the original paper was leaked, cleverly masked as "guess papers." The minister had an unusual admission for which there is no precedent when he confessed that although the recommendations from the K. Radhakrishnan committee had been adopted, there had been a "command chain breach." He said, "We accept our responsibility, and we have agreed to plug the systemic weaknesses."

The timeline of the breach suggests a sophisticated operation. Although the exam was held on May 3, it took until May 7 for the NTA to flag complaints about suspicious similarities between the actual questions and papers circulating online. Following an investigation involving the Higher Education Department and central agencies, it was confirmed by May 12 that the sanctity of the exam had been compromised.

When pressed on whether the rot reached inside the National Testing Agency itself, Pradhan confirmed that the CBI has been called in to lead the investigation. The probe into the paper leak issue has been intensifying with each passing day. He expressed confidence that the agency would root out what he described as an "education mafia" and an organised network of fraudsters. The decision to scrap the exam entirely, he argued, was the only way to protect the interests of honest candidates who would otherwise be sidelined by those who cheated the system.

In a bid to make the re-run less of a headache for the hundreds of thousands of students affected, the government is introducing some logistical changes. Candidates will now be allowed to choose their preferred exam cities to cut down on travel stress. Students would not even have to undergo the process of re-registering themselves since all they need to do is get fresh admit cards from the NTA website, beginning on June 14, through the same credentials they had used before. Considering how the first round had been plagued with issues related to security and transparency, the next phase must ensure that all these concerns are met head-on.
