On the 78th Foundation Day of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel graced the event, marking the occasion with the inauguration of the Quality Conclave in Gandhinagar.
Organised by the Ahmedabad office of BIS in collaboration with the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the conclave highlighted the importance of quality and standards in shaping India's future.
During his address, Chief Minister Patel underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a self-reliant India through the 'Make in India, Made for the World' initiative.
He emphasised that the goal of 'Zero Defect, Zero Effect,' which promotes the production of high-quality products and services, is key to the nation’s growth.
In line with this vision, the Chief Minister launched a Gujarati comic book, aimed at educating schoolchildren about the importance of quality and standards.
Additionally, the Chief Minister presented trophies to the winners of the 'Standard Carnival' quiz competition, which further encouraged the spirit of excellence among the youth.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India is rapidly progressing towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy.
He also highlighted the crucial role of the Bureau of Indian Standards in ensuring that Indian products and services are globally competitive.
Patel credited the Prime Minister’s emphasis on quality and sustainability, which has led to a transformative shift in the image of Indian products, moving towards a standard of excellence recognised internationally.
He further commended the impact of the new BIS Acts, implemented in 2016, which have significantly contributed to enhancing the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in India. This, in turn, has increased public expectations, leading to both improved product quality and enhanced public service delivery systems, especially in Gujarat.
Patel spoke about Gujarat’s work culture, which, under the Prime Minister's guidance, places great importance on maintaining high standards across government services.
The Chief Minister shared that the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office had received ISO 9001 Quality Certification in 2009 under Modi’s leadership, and the office has now secured the ISO 9001-2015 Certification for the 2024-2026 period.
This demonstrates the state's continued commitment to upholding quality in its operations. Additionally, the state government’s focus on quality has extended to the Procurement Policy of 2024, which prioritises the procurement of BIS-certified products, ensuring that the standards are met at all levels.
Sumit Sengar, the Director of BIS Ahmedabad, delivered a welcome address, highlighting the significant contributions of BIS and the Gujarat government in advancing quality and standards across the state.
Sengar pointed out that of the 10,000 standard clubs established across India by BIS, 1,200 are active in Gujarat. These clubs are designed to foster a scientific understanding of standards and quality among students, empowering the younger generation to embrace and promote high-quality standards.
He further mentioned that Gujarat accounted for 12 per cent of the BIS licenses issued across the country, underscoring the state’s pivotal role in driving the national quality agenda.
Sengar reaffirmed BIS’s commitment to contributing towards the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, in collaboration with its stakeholders. The conclave also featured a speech from Sandeep Engineer, President of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to participate in this key event.
The conclave was attended by various leaders from Gujarat's business sector, industrialists, and BIS officials, all united in their effort to advance quality standards and contribute to the nation’s progress.
