Gujarat High Court Receives Boost With ₹133 cr Investments.

On a significant day for the state's judicial system, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, alongside Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several key projects aimed at strengthening the state's judiciary infrastructure at the Gujarat High Court.

The occasion was also marked by the presence of Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Sunita Agarwal, and the state's Law Minister, Rushikesh Patel.

The initiatives unveiled on December 5 include projects worth Rs 133 crore, which are designed to enhance the capabilities of Gujarat's judicial infrastructure. This move is part of a larger effort to bring Gujarat in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is deeply committed to ensuring that the judiciary has access to modern buildings and advanced technology to facilitate the effective delivery of justice.

Chief Minister Patel took a moment to reflect on the Gujarat High Court’s journey, noting its humble beginnings at Akashvani Bhavan in Navrangpura when Gujarat became a separate state in 1960.

He highlighted the significant progress made over the years, culminating in the establishment of the state-of-the-art Gujarat High Court building in Sola. Patel emphasised that the state government remains committed to providing the best facilities for judges and court staff, which includes modern buildings and residences tied to the courts.

A key component of this vision is the operationalisation of the Principal Civil Judge’s court at each taluka headquarters across the state. By ensuring these courts function effectively, the state is fulfilling Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a widespread judicial infrastructure that reaches every corner of Gujarat.

Chief Minister Patel underscored the vital role that a robust judiciary, in combination with law and order, plays in the development and governance of any nation. He further stated that the judiciary, executive, and legislature are the essential pillars of democracy, and only through proper coordination between these three entities can true progress in governance be achieved.

The Chief Minister’s remarks also centred on the need for swift justice, which he believes is crucial for citizens to experience good governance firsthand. He affirmed that the state government is committed to allocating resources based on the judiciary’s requirements.

This commitment is reflected in the significant increase in the Law Department’s budget for the fiscal year 2024-25. The budget has been raised from Rs 1,698 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 2,586 crore, indicating the government’s strong focus on improving judicial infrastructure, digitalisation, and manpower in the sector.

The emphasis on digital infrastructure is also part of the Prime Minister’s agenda to ensure transparency and efficiency within governance. Gujarat, as a frontrunner in adopting advanced technology in the judicial system, has set a new benchmark by becoming the first state to broadcast live court proceedings on YouTube.

Moreover, the state judiciary has embraced virtual courts, digital portals, and paperless e-filing, making significant strides towards a fully digital judicial system.

Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant, who also spoke at the event, highlighted the importance of a strong judiciary in the nation-building process. He praised Gujarat’s efforts to implement cutting-edge technology and infrastructure to enhance the efficiency of the judicial system.

Kant further commended the state government’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Gujarat High Court, noting the role of technological advancements in ensuring smooth and swift justice.

Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal of the Gujarat High Court also expressed her satisfaction with the state government’s proactive approach to improving judicial infrastructure. She noted that adequate infrastructure is essential to expedite and simplify the judicial process.

She praised the state for facilitating the laying of the foundation stones for several new buildings, which will significantly contribute to enhancing the judicial experience. Agarwal also acknowledged the government's efforts to improve health facilities for judicial employees, which is crucial for their well-being.

The judicial system’s transformation has also seen the introduction of innovative technological solutions, such as the digital hearing platform for family court proceedings and the e-filing system for negotiable instrument cases.

These initiatives will undoubtedly play a vital role in accelerating the judicial process and providing timely justice. The eGujHC vision document is expected to bring about a paperless ecosystem, marking a revolutionary shift in the way the state’s judicial system operates.

Justice Biren Vaishnav, another Gujarat High Court judge, lauded the state government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening judicial infrastructure. He highlighted that Gujarat's legal facilities and judicial infrastructure are now being recognised nationwide for their progressive nature and the government's dedication to improving the system.

The inauguration event was attended by numerous prominent figures, including Gujarat High Court Judges Justice A.Y. Kogje and Justice A.S. Supehia,

Advocate General Kamal Trivedi, Gujarat High Court Advocates Association President Brijesh Trivedi, as well as former Chief Justices from various states and members of the Bar Council. The collective presence of these key stakeholders underscored the importance of this event in shaping the future of Gujarat’s judicial landscape.
