Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren waves to people before taking oath as the 14th CM of the State in Ranchi on Thursday.

The story of the newly sworn in Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is intriguing. The man who once wanted to pursue a career in sketch artistry has created history in Jharkhand by becoming the only politician in the State to become Chief Minister for the fourth time.

Soren’s father Shibu Soren had taken oath as Jharkhand Chief Minister twice, while senior BJP leader Arjun Munda has remained the Chief Minister of the State three times.

Soren is also the only Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who retained his post after assembly elections. He is also the first Chief Minister to have come back with a huge majority of 56 seats in the State Assembly.

Soren entered politics in 2005, when he contested the Assembly elections from Dumka seat. However, he was defeated by independent candidate Stephen Marandi in the polls. After the results he stepped back from politics and engaged himself with his first love -- sketching.

To improve his sketching skills, Hemant started gathering information about colleges abroad. He even identified one or two colleges, but his parents told him to study whatever he wanted to study in the country.

He took admission in the Birla Institute of Technology in Mesra, Ranchi, through government quota to study mechanical engineering.

Soren was married to Kalpana Soren in February 2006.

However, on 22 May 2009, his elder brother Durga Soren passed away due to chronic illness. Durga Soren was the executive president of JMM. He along with his father Shibu Soren was handling the command of JMM.

Due to increasing age and poor health, Shibu Soren limited himself to central politics only.

After the death of Durga Soren, Hemant Soren had to leave engineering studies midway and joined full time politics. He was elected to Rajya Sabha before becoming the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand in the year 2010.

The young tribal leader took oath as Chief Minister for the first time on 13 July 2013. After running the government for one and a half years, he had to resign after losing the assembly elections on 23 December 2014.

He took oath as Chief Minister for the second time on 29 December 2019, but had to resign on 31 January 2024 after his arrest in the money laundering case. He came out of jail after spending five months in jail on 28 June 2024 and again took oath as Chief Minister for the third time on 4 July 2024.

On 28 November 2024, Hemant Soren took oath as the fourteenth Chief Minister of Jharkhand, creating several new records in the political history of the State.
