The elections for the Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Executive Members of the Bar Council of India (BCI) are scheduled to take place on 2 March 2025.
The nomination deadline has been set for 28 February, with candidates given the option to withdraw their nominations by 1 March.
This year’s elections are expected to be highly competitive, with members from various states preparing to contest for the top positions.
The election process has already sparked intense lobbying and strategic planning among contenders, making it one of the most closely watched polls in BCI’s history.
Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar has held the position of Chairman for six consecutive terms, while Senior Advocate S Prabhakaran from Tamil Nadu has served as Vice Chairman for the past three years.
The election will determine whether their tenure continues or if new leadership takes over.
Additionally, Senior Advocate Apurba Kumar Sharma from Assam, currently serving as the Executive Chairman, will also see his position open for contest.
Alongside the elections for Chairman and Vice Chairman, new Executive Members of the BCI will be selected.
Once elected, these members will be responsible for appointing the Executive Committee Chairman, a crucial role in shaping the council’s policies and decision-making.
For six terms, Bihar has held the Chairman’s position unchallenged, but this year, a strong challenge from other states is emerging.
Despite this, Mishra remains a strong contender. His influence among lawyers across India, as well as his reputation as a key figure linking the legal community with the government and the Supreme Court, make him a formidable candidate.
He is widely regarded as a trusted representative of the legal fraternity.
