The historic 1971 surrender photo at Indian Army HQ is replaced.

The historic 'surrender' picture of the Pakistan Army in the 1971 war has been replaced from the Indian Army headquarters with an art piece depicting the Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh featuring modern military paraphernalia.

The photograph, showing Pakistan Army's Lt General AAK Niazi signing the formal surrender of 93,000 army personnel after their defeat at the hands of the Indian Army in 1971, ended the 13-day war and led to the creation of Bangladesh.

On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff, along with President of the AWWA, Sunita Dwivedi, installed the iconic 1971 surrender painting in its most fitting location, The Manekshaw Centre, named after the architect and hero of the 1971 war, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Senior officers, both serving and veterans of the Indian Army, were present on this occasion.

Veterans criticised the move:

The move brought criticism from defence veterans.

Meanwhile, the activists of the youth wing of the Tripura Congress also took out a massive protest rally here on Tuesday, condemning the alleged removal of a historic photograph.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday claimed in Lok Sabha that a photograph of Pakistan surrendering before India has been removed from the army headquarters. In her Zero Hour reference, Gandhi said the picture was removed on Monday, which also happens to be Vijay Diwas.
