'Illegal' old age home raided in Noida, elderly found tied up

A crime involving  elderly people as victims has come as no less than a horror in UP's Noida where the inmates of a 'Vridh Ashram' have been meted with inhuman treatment under deplorable conditions . Forty-two elderly people were rescued from this home after a police raid at the institution found some women tied up, many residents without clothes and others in "basement-like" rooms of the 'illegal' old age home.

A crime involving  elderly people as victims has come as no less than a horror in UP's Noida where the inmates of a 'Vridh Ashram' have been meted with inhuman treatment under deplorable conditions . Forty-two elderly people were rescued from this home after a police raid at the institution found some women tied up, many residents without clothes and others in "basement-like" rooms of the 'illegal' old age home.


The revelations came forth after Police raid was  conducted on Thursday in the presence of members from the Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission and the State Welfare Department, the old-age home was found in a deplorable condition.Elderly people were found  locked in rooms, with no staff to take care of them, some of them wearing urine and feces stained clothes, while others left alone with no clothes. Such a pitiable condition of the elderly people was found at  Anand Niketan Vridha Ashram, in Noida's Sector 55, the name given to this Home.


When the officials reached the spot, they found many elderly people tied up in their clothes and locked in rooms. According to State Women Commission member Meenakshi Bharala, some old men were locked up in basement-like rooms. While most of the elderly men were not wearing clothes, the women were given partial clothing. Many of them were found with urine-stained or feces-stained clothes, officials said while describing pathetic conditions of the Home.

 

Meenakshi Bharala, a women's commission member, said the Anand Niketan Vridha Seva Ashram at C-5, Sector 55, Noida, was an illegal old-age home."During the raid, an elderly woman was found tied up while other elderly people were locked in basement-like rooms," she said.Some men did not even have clothes, while many elderly women were found in half-clad condition, Bharala said.

 

"This old age home is completely illegal. There were 42 elderly people living in the ashram, out of which three elderly people will be shifted to an old-age home run by the social welfare department on Friday and the rest will be shifted to other government-approved old-age homes in the next five days, she added.Bharala said the old-age home will be sealed with the help of the administration.
