IMD issues red alert for parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Punjab and Rajasthan as monsoon continues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued red alerts for several districts across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan as the monsoon continued to bring heavy downpours in the region.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the red alert has been issued mainly for the Jammu region. Districts including Reasi, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Doda are under the highest warning level. The IMD also placed Kishtwar under a red alert on Tuesday morning.

Heavy rain has disrupted transport networks in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway has been blocked at multiple locations due to landslides, mudslides and shooting stones in Ramban district, including Marog, Digdol, Battery Chashma and Kela Morh.

Officials said a portion of the Padder road was washed away near Traith Nallah in Kishtwar, while landslides forced the closure of the Ramnagar-Udhampur road in Udhampur and the Jangalwar-Thathri road in Doda.

Rail traffic was also hit. The down line over Br-232 between Pathankot Cantt and Kandrori has been suspended temporarily, while the up line remains functional. Trains are being diverted either on a single track or via the Pathankot-Amritsar route.

In Himachal Pradesh, red alerts are in place for Chamba, Mandi and Kangra districts, with very heavy rainfall, lightning and thunderstorms predicted on August 26. The severe conditions raise the risk of flash floods and landslides, and authorities have urged residents to remain cautious.

Punjab has also been placed under a red alert in Ludhiana, Sangrur, Barnala and Mansa districts, where heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms could impact normal life and disrupt infrastructure.

Further south, the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur warned of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Rajasthan, issuing an orange alert for Rajsamand, Sirohi and Udaipur districts.

Meanwhile, the Yamuna River in Delhi continues to flow close to the danger mark. Visuals from the Old Yamuna bridge showed water levels hovering near the 205-metre threshold. The IMD also issued an alert for moderate to intense rainfall spells across the national capital and nearby regions.

“Orange to red colour warning for moderate to intense spells of rainfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and north coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 3 hours,” the IMD said in a post on X.

On Monday, heavy rain battered parts of the capital and the wider National Capital Region, with areas including Baba Khadak Singh Marg, ITO and the Yamuna floodplains reporting waterlogging.

Mumbai too received heavy showers, causing flooding in Sion’s Gandhi Market area and on the Eastern Express Highway. The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the city on August 26 and 27.
