India has risen to the ninth position globally in terms of total forest area, as reported in the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025, published by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) during an event in Bali. This marks an improvement from its previous ranking at 10 in the prior assessment.
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared this milestone in a post on X, emphasising that India has also maintained its third-place ranking worldwide for annual forest area gain. This achievement underscores the nation’s consistent advancements in sustainable forest management practices.
Yadav attributed this progress to the effective policies and programs implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These initiatives prioritise forest protection, afforestation, and active community participation, which have collectively driven India’s rise in global forest rankings.

The minister highlighted the ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ campaign as a key initiative that has galvanised citizens across India to engage in tree plantation and conservation activities. This campaign has fostered widespread public involvement, strengthening the country’s collective resolve to build a greener and more sustainable future.
Yadav further noted that the Modi government’s sustained emphasis on forest conservation, coupled with large-scale plantation drives led by state governments, has been instrumental in achieving these results. The combination of strategic policy measures and grassroots efforts has solidified India’s position as a global leader in forest area expansion and sustainable environmental practices.
