Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, met with Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez in Panama City on Thursday to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation. This visit marks the first ministerial-level visit from India to Panama within the first 100 days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term in office.
Following their meeting, MoS Margherita shared his enthusiasm on X, stating, “Had a fruitful meeting with Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez today. We discussed areas of mutual interest and look forward to continued India-Panama collaboration for a prosperous future together!”
Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez expressed his appreciation, saying, “I thank Pabitra Margherita for his visit and reaffirm our interest in strengthening the longstanding friendship and collaboration between our nations.” He highlighted the potential for significant growth and mutual benefits between India and Panama.
Martinez also emphasised that under the leadership of Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino, Panama is dedicated to achieving shared goals with India. The discussions focused on various aspects of bilateral relations, including economic and political cooperation.
In addition to his meeting with Martinez, MoS Margherita engaged with Panamanian ministers, Indian diaspora members, business leaders, and media representatives. He remarked on the significant presence of the Indian community in Panama, noting their integration into Panamanian society.
Margherita’s visit, which began on Wednesday, was marked by a warm reception from Indian Ambassador to Panama, Sumit Seth. The visit underscored India’s commitment to further strengthening ties with Panama, setting the groundwork for increased collaboration across multiple sectors.
The relationship between India and Panama dates back to the mid-19th century when Indian workers contributed to the construction of the Panama Railways and the Panama Canal. Official diplomatic relations were established in 1962, marking the beginning of formal cooperation between the two nations.
