Considering reports of a rise in respiratory illnesses in China, including the speculated spread of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), India’s health ministry has assured the nation that it is well-prepared to handle potential challenges.
A Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) meeting was convened on Saturday in New Delhi under the chairmanship of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Experts from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Disaster Management Cell, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) Division, and major hospitals, including AIIMS Delhi, participated.
The Union health ministry stated that India’s robust surveillance systems and health networks remain vigilant, ensuring readiness to respond to any emerging health challenges.
"The reports also suggest that the cause of the present surge is Influenza virus, RSV and HMPV – the usual pathogens that are expected during the season," the ministry affirmed.
No unusual trends detected in India
According to the ministry, surveillance data from the ICMR and IDSP networks indicate no abnormal increase in cases of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Hospital authorities have similarly reported no significant rise in respiratory illnesses, apart from usual seasonal variations.
ICMR’s network also tests for respiratory viruses such as Adenovirus, RSV, and HMPV. The ministry clarified, "These pathogens as well do not show any unusual increase in the tested samples."
To strengthen preparedness, ICMR has pledged to expand the number of laboratories capable of testing for HMPV and monitor its trends throughout the year.
Government tracking global developments
The government confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation in China through various channels and has requested WHO to provide regular updates.
"These viruses are already in circulation globally, including India," it emphasised.
Dr Atul Goel, Director-General of DGHS, reiterated that HMPV is akin to other respiratory viruses causing common cold.
"Take the normal medicines that are required for cold and fever. There is nothing to be alarmed about in the present situation," he said.
Dr Goel also urged the public to follow general precautions against respiratory infections.
"If somebody has cough and cold, then they should avoid coming in contact with a lot of people to prevent the infection from spreading," he added.
The ministry shared that recent preparedness drills across the country revealed that India is well-equipped to manage any surge in respiratory illnesses.
"The health systems and surveillance networks remain vigilant, ensuring the country is ready to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges," it asserted.
