India has achieved another landmark in its defence capabilities with the successful flight-tests of the guided Pinaka weapon system.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted these tests as part of a rigorous validation process to confirm the system’s effectiveness in meeting Provisional Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQR).
The trials, conducted across three phases in different field firing ranges, evaluated the weapon’s range, accuracy, consistency, and rapid engagement of multiple targets in salvo mode, as per a statement by the Defence Ministry.
“Twelve rockets from each production agency, launched from two in-service Pinaka launchers upgraded by the production agencies, were tested as part of these comprehensive trials,” the Defence Ministry's statement confirmed.
These tests mark a critical step in assessing the weapon system’s readiness for formal induction into the Indian Army.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh applauded the DRDO and the Indian Army for their accomplishment, affirming that the system’s integration will significantly enhance the Armed Forces’ artillery firepower.
“The induction of this Guided Pinaka Weapon System will further boost the artillery fire power of the Armed Forces,” Singh stated.
The guided Pinaka system, a precision-strike variant of the Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System, is entirely indigenously designed and developed.
The Armament Research and Development Establishment spearheaded its development, working in collaboration with Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research and Development Laboratory, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, and Proof & Experimental Establishment.
Key production partners include Munitions India Limited and Economic Explosives Limited for the ammunition, with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Larsen & Toubro producing the launcher and Battery Command Post.
Secretary of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman, Dr Samir V. Kamat, extended his congratulations to all involved in the trials, stating that the rocket system “completed all prerequisite flight trials before induction into the Indian Army.”
The successful testing of the guided Pinaka weapon system aligns with India’s drive toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
