India on Tuesday sharply criticised Pakistan over reports of deadly violence in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), accusing Islamabad of attempting to conceal its failures through a campaign of misinformation and calling on the international community to hold it accountable for alleged human rights abuses.
The remarks came amid escalating unrest in PoK, where clashes between protesters and security forces have left several people dead, raising further questions also over Pak Army chief Asim Munir's Kashmir dreams.
Addressing a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan was resorting to “fake news and videos” to divert attention from developments in the region.
“We continue to see in this context a pattern of fake news and videos emanating from Pakistan. It is a desperate attempt by Pakistan to cover up its own failings and deflect attention away from its human rights abuses,” Jaiswal said.
“There are reports of severe police brutality in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in which several protestors have been killed and many injured. We hope the international community will hold Pakistan accountable for its misdeeds and abuses,” he added.
India will continue to stand by Afghans: Envoy at UN
New York: India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, has reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the Afghan people, highlighting the country’s humanitarian and development assistance amid Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges.
Speaking at the UNAMA briefing during a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Afghanistan, Harish described India and Afghanistan as “contiguous neighbours” and “civilisational states” linked by centuries-old ties.
Harish noted that India’s participation in the Doha Working Group meetings and its strong bilateral development partnership reflected its continued support for Afghanistan. “We are intensifying our cooperation with UN agencies as well as others such as the Afghan Red Cross Society, in priority areas for the Afghan people. The visits to India of Afghan ministers last year ensured the necessary planning and coordination so that our support reaches the intended beneficiaries,” he said.
