India’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.2 per cent in July 2025, down from 5.6 pc in the previous month, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday.
The figures reflect a positive trend in the country’s employment scenario. During July, the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in Current Weekly Status among persons aged 15 years and above stood at 54.9 pc, compared to 54.2 pc in June 2025. The LFPR in rural areas was 56.9 pc and 50.7 pc in urban areas for the same age group.
Data further showed that the LFPR in CWS for rural males of age 15 years and above was 78.1 pc, while it stood at 75.1 pc for urban males. Among rural females, the participation rate rose to 36.9 pc in July from 35.2 pc in June 2025.

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in CWS also improved. In rural areas, the WPR among persons aged 15 years and above increased to 54.4 pc in July from 53.3 pc in June. In urban areas, it registered a slight rise to 47.0 pc from 46.8 pc during the same period.
The WPR for rural females aged 15 years and above was 35.5 pc in July, compared with 23.5 pc recorded for urban females. The overall female WPR at the national level stood at 31.6 pc for July 2025.
The Ministry noted that the July 2025 monthly bulletin marks the fourth in the ongoing series of reports under the PLFS.
