A grand memorial dedicated to the late Shibu Soren is set to come up in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, with the Urban Development Department initiating the process of land allotment for the project.
The Jharkhand State Housing Board has been instructed to identify a suitable plot along Ranchi’s Bypass Road, one of the city’s busiest stretches.
According to officials, land in Bhusur Mauza, near DPS Ranchi School, has emerged as the preferred site. The Housing Board had earlier acquired 59.13 acres here from the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) for an integrated housing scheme. A portion of this land—around four acres—is now being considered for the memorial.
The location is regarded as strategic. The route is used daily by the Chief Minister, Cabinet colleagues, the Speaker, the Chief Justice, legislators and senior officials while commuting to the Secretariat, Vidhan Sabha and High Court.

VVIPs such as the President, Prime Minister and Union Ministers also take this road when travelling from Ranchi airport to Raj Bhawan and other destinations.
Authorities believe that situating the memorial here will not only highlight Shibu Soren’s legacy but also make it accessible for citizens and dignitaries to stop and pay homage.
Planned on the lines of Ranchi’s Bapu Vatika in Morhabadi, the memorial will feature landscaped parks, decorative lighting and a central statue of Soren. Officials said it is envisioned as both a tribute and a public space that will reflect the ethos of Jharkhand’s tribal identity and struggles.
Shibu Soren, revered as Dishom Guru (leader of the land), played a pivotal role in spearheading the Jharkhand movement that led to the creation of the state in 2000.
A three-time Chief Minister and long-serving MP, he was also among the founding leaders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). For many in the state, he remains the tallest tribal leader and a symbol of their political assertion.
The proposed memorial, officials said, aims to enshrine that legacy for generations to come.
