Heavy rains in Ranchi prompt govt damage assessment.

The Jharkhand state government has directed district authorities to evaluate the losses incurred due to the heavy rainfall in Ranchi and submit a report at the earliest, according to a state official on Tuesday.

Since 19 June, Ranchi has been experiencing continuous downpours, leading to severe waterlogging, damage to crops and property, and disruption to essential services.

To address the situation, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri instructed all circle officers to inspect the affected areas and prepare detailed reports to facilitate compensation. The information is to be submitted promptly, according to an official communiqué.

To enhance coordination, the deputy commissioner also instructed officials to create a group on a social media platform to ensure faster communication and regular updates.

“Further emphasis was placed on updating the disaster management plan to improve responses to such incidents in future,” the statement added.

The rain has proven deadly. A 40-year-old man was killed on Monday when a wall collapsed on him while he was returning from school with his two children.

In a separate incident, two women were fatally struck by lightning in the Sonahatu block of Ranchi district.

According to meteorological records, Ranchi received a remarkable 459 mm of rainfall between 1 June and 23 June — more than three times the normal average of 125.7 mm for the same period.
On Monday alone, the city recorded 44 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director of the India Meteorological Department’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre, stated that light to moderate rainfall is expected across Jharkhand, including Ranchi, over the next four to five days.

“The weather conditions remain conducive to continued rainfall, with moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal being a major contributing factor,” Anand added.

Cumulative rainfall over Jharkhand between 1 June and 23 June has reached 247.4 mm, more than double the normal average of 122.6 mm for this period — a 102 per cent surplus. The situation continues to be closely monitored by state and district authorities.
