Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh during a ceremony for distribution of appointment letters to nurses and paramedical staff, and flagging off of the Ayushman Bharat registration vans, in New Delhi, Sunday.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda and newly appointed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday distributed appointment letters to 1,400 nurses in a major recruitment drive aimed at strengthening the healthcare workforce in the capital. The event took place at Vigyan Bhawan and also marked the flagging off of Ayushman Bharat Registration Vans.

Addressing the gathering, CM Rekha Gupta expressed her happiness over the appointments, calling it a significant step in resolving the long-standing shortage of nursing staff in Delhi’s hospitals. “It is a matter of great joy that after many years in the history of the Delhi government, permanent nursing staff are being appointed. For a long time, hospitals in Delhi have been running in a disorganised manner due to a shortage of staff. The government has worked hard to fill these vacancies, and today, around 1,400 nurses have received appointment letters,” Gupta said.

She further congratulated the health department and the Ministry of Health for their joint efforts in strengthening healthcare services. “Our aim is to ensure there is no shortage of medicines, doctors, staff, or infrastructure in Delhi’s hospitals. I wholeheartedly congratulate the Health Ministry and Health Department. Let us all work together to serve the people of Delhi,” the Chief Minister added.

Union Minister JP Nadda, who also serves as BJP President, took the opportunity to criticise the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration for failing to utilise funds allocated under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. “Under the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, we had allocated ₹1,700 crore to Delhi between 2021 and February 2025. But not even a single rupee was spent. Now the responsibility of using this fund for public welfare lies with Rekha ji,” Nadda said.

Continuing his criticism of AAP, he accused the previous government of neglecting the needs of Delhi’s poor. “We were ready to provide water, but the vessel was kept upside down. On February 20, you turned the vessel up and received Ayushman Bharat. Since September 2, 2017, PM Modi has been ready to offer ₹5 lakh for the healthcare of the poor, but pride came in the way. This was injustice to the poor,” he said.

Nadda also contrasted the Centre’s flagship Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative with AAP’s Mohalla Clinics, calling the latter shortsighted. “A farsighted leader envisions Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, while shortsighted ones promote Mohalla Clinics. From a mother’s pregnancy to the time her child turns two, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs cover all vaccinations and ensure proper maternal and child care. India is now leading in reproductive and child health,” he added.

The event marked a significant milestone in healthcare delivery in Delhi, with both state and central leadership promising improved services and a renewed focus on public health infrastructure.
