Fourteen companies of central paramilitary forces will arrive in West Bengal on Wednesday to ensure the smooth conduct of the Kaliganj Assembly by-election scheduled for June 19.
According to the Election Commission, a total of 20 companies had been requested by the Chief Electoral Officer’s office for this election. Of the 14 companies arriving, 12 will be stationed to provide direct security during voting, while the remaining two will be assigned to guard the strong room where the electronic voting machines will be stored after the election.
Ahead of the polling day, the central forces will also patrol sensitive regions from Wednesday to instil confidence among voters and deter any attempts at intimidation or violence. In a first for Kaliganj, CCTV cameras will be installed outside each polling booth. While webcasting from inside booths is a standard procedure, the addition of external surveillance will allow the Election Commission to monitor both voter movement and central force activity more closely in real-time.
