The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India has expressed its gratitude to the Government of India, the official Indian delegation, political leaders and citizens for participating in the state funeral of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, describing the gesture as a "powerful expression of mutual respect" and a reflection of the deep historical, cultural and human ties shared by the two countries.

In a detailed post on X, the Iranian Embassy thanked the official Indian delegation and all those who travelled to Tehran to attend the funeral ceremonies and pay their respects to Khamenei.

"The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Republic of India extends its heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to the friendly Government and people of India, especially the official delegation that attended on behalf of the Government and people of India, for participating in the funeral ceremonies and paying tribute to the martyred Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei," the embassy said.

The diplomatic mission further stated that the presence of Indian political leaders, Members of Parliament, eminent scholars, intellectuals and representatives of various religious communities at the ceremonies highlighted the enduring relationship between India and Iran.

"The esteemed presence of political leaders, Members of Parliament, eminent scholars, intellectuals, and leaders of India's diverse faiths and religious communities at these solemn ceremonies reflected the deep historical, cultural, and human bonds between our two nations. It also stood as a powerful expression of mutual respect and sincere solidarity with the people of Iran during this time of national mourning," the statement added.

The embassy said the Iranian people would always remember India's gesture of friendship and compassion during a difficult period, adding that such goodwill would further strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries. It also conveyed its appreciation to Indian officials, public representatives and citizens who offered condolences following Khamenei's death.

India was represented at the funeral by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain, who attended the state ceremony in Tehran last week on behalf of the Government of India. The Indian delegation participated in the mourning ceremony as Iran began formal funeral rites for Khamenei, who was killed during the recent US-Israel conflict.

Among other prominent Indian attendees were senior Congress leader and former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who also travelled to Tehran to pay their respects.

Meanwhile, Iran concluded a two-day public farewell ceremony for the late Supreme Leader, drawing millions of mourners to the capital. The funeral witnessed the participation of senior political, military and religious leaders, many of whom pledged to carry forward Khamenei's legacy and vowed accountability for those responsible for his death.

Khamenei's three sons were seen offering prayers beside his coffin during the ceremonies. However, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has since assumed the position of Supreme Leader, was notably absent from the public funeral proceedings.

Following Khamenei's death, Iran formally appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country's political and religious leadership.
