Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was grievously injured in a burglary attempt at his Bandra West residence early Thursday morning. The actor sustained six stab wounds during a scuffle with an intruder who entered his home with the intent of robbery.
The chilling incident, which has shocked fans and industry peers alike, occurred when the intruder broke into the actor's 12-story apartment and attempted to enter the room of his younger son, Jeh.
Saif's wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, later issued a statement thanking well wishers for their support.
Would have been fatal if knife had been one millimetre deeper: doctor
The burglary attempt began when the intruder accessed the building through the fire escape and entered Saif's residence via an open window.
A house help spotted the thief and raised an alarm, prompting Saif to intervene.
During the altercation, the actor sustained six injuries: two deep wounds, two intermediate, and two minor.
One injury near the spine was severe enough to require immediate surgery.
The knife, part of which was embedded near Saif's spine, was carefully removed during the operation.
Doctors at Lilavati Hospital confirmed that a 2.5-inch knife was removed from Saif’s spine during surgery.
“If the knife had been a millimetre deeper, his life would have been in danger,” they noted.
Doctors also highlighted that the weapon came dangerously close to puncturing the spinal bones and causing saline fluid leakage, which could have been fatal.
Saif's likely to be shifted to regular ward today
The actor, initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following surgery, is reportedly stable.
Doctors have confirmed that Saif will likely be shifted to a regular ward today.
His recovery has been closely monitored, with medical experts expressing relief that no critical damage was sustained despite the severity of the injuries.
Police grilling labourers
Mumbai police have formed 20 teams to track down and nab the intruder who stabbed Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan in his apartment in upscale Bandra here and are tapping their network of informers to locate him, officials have said.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dixit Gedam, the intruder appears to have had detailed knowledge of the building’s layout.
The attacker is suspected of gaining access via a pipe at the rear of the building and navigating through the fire escape.
CCTV footage from a resident’s sixth-floor camera captured the suspect entering the premises, although the intruder avoided detection by using a rear gate to escape.
Police are currently interrogating two labourers who were working on the building’s terrace at the time of the incident.
Officials suspect the attacker may have obtained specific details about the building through these workers or other sources.

Hours after the incident, Kareena Kapoor Khan issued a statement, expressing gratitude to fans and the film fraternity for their prayers and support.
Saif’s ordeal has sparked concerns over the safety of high-profile individuals in Mumbai, with calls for enhanced security measures in residential complexes.
