The House was already scheduled to take up a resolution to remove Speaker Om Birla, and Pal questioned how two such significant issues could be tackled simultaneously.

Proceedings in the Lok Sabha descended into chaos on Monday afternoon, leading to an adjournment until 3 pm as the Government and Opposition clashed over the parliamentary agenda. The friction point shifted from domestic policy to the war in West Asia, with Opposition benches vociferously demanding a full-blown debate on the regional crisis rather than a mere ministerial statement.

The disruption began almost immediately after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar rose to brief the House on the latest developments in the Middle East. His attempt was drowned out by slogans and the brandishing of placards, as members insisted on a formal discussion that would allow for cross-examination and a deeper dive into India’s strategic interests. Jagadambika Pal, presiding over the session, attempted to restore order by pointing out the logistical absurdity of the Opposition’s demands; the House was already scheduled to take up a resolution to remove Speaker Om Birla, and Pal questioned how two such significant issues could be tackled simultaneously.

The government was quick to seize on the optics of the protest, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accusing the Opposition of abandoning the "basic ethics" of the House. Rijiju noted that while the Government had accepted the notice to discuss the Speaker’s removal and was prepared to face the motion, the Opposition seemed more intent on derailment than actual debate. Despite Pal’s suggestion that dissatisfied members should approach the Business Advisory Committee to formalise a future discussion on the war, the shouting continued unabated.

With the House refusing to settle, Pal made it clear that the no-confidence resolution against the Speaker could only proceed when the chamber was in order. Finding no middle ground, he pulled the plug on the morning session. This stormy start followed a more somber opening hour, during which the House had stood in silence to pay tribute to one sitting and four former members who recently passed away. As the clock ticks toward the 3 pm restart, the stalemate over whether the day belongs to the Speaker’s fate or the crisis in West Asia remains unresolved.
