Opposition MPs, including Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, protest at Makar Dwar of Parliament over the issue of SIR (Special Intensive Review) exercise in Bihar.

On Tuesday was the second day in a row that the Lok Sabha was disrupted as opposition parties persisted in their loud demonstrations calling for a debate on Operation Sindoor. The uproar forced Speaker Om Birla to adjourn proceedings until 12 noon.

As the House convened at 11 am, opposition MPs—including members of the Congress—rose to their feet, shouting slogans and displaying placards. Their primary demand was a discussion on Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces' military response targeting terror camps and defence installations across the border in Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made an appeal to the protesting members, urging them to return to their seats so that the House could proceed with the scheduled Question Hour, which was to focus on farmers’ issues. “This day belongs to the farmers. Please allow the House to function so that we can address issues related to the poor, farmers, and rural India,” Chouhan said, stressing the significance of the Question Hour for the agrarian community.

Speaker Om Birla also intervened, reprimanding the opposition for violating House decorum. “You don’t want the House to function. You don’t want a discussion on farmers’ issues. I cannot allow sloganeering or the display of placards inside the House,” he said.

Despite the Speaker’s warning, the opposition continued their protest. Unable to restore order, Birla adjourned the proceedings until 12 noon. The first day of the Monsoon Session on Monday had also been marred by similar protests, leading to repeated adjournments and ultimately preventing any meaningful debate.

The three-day offensive by the Indian military, which started on May 7, is known as Operation Sindoor. In retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, the strikes targeted several strategic installations and terror sites in Pakistan. The opposition has been demanding an immediate and full discussion in Parliament on the scope, planning, and impact of the military operation.
