Mamallapuram, renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage site, is poised to become India’s inaugural Green Destination, marking a significant milestone in sustainable tourism.
The final award for Mamallapuram is scheduled to be formally announced and presented following an audit in the coming months, making it the first World Heritage Site in the Asia Pacific region to achieve this distinction, an official stated on Saturday.
Green Destinations, headquartered in The Netherlands, serves as a Global Sustainable Tourism Council accredited certification body, advocating for sustainable destinations, their businesses, and communities. To date, 122 destinations worldwide have received certification from Global Destinations.
The certification project for Mamallapuram was entirely funded by the MAMAT Trust under Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, as part of their commitment to celebrating Indian culture and heritage.
