A man detained for questioning in a rape case was found hanging in a police lock-up in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Siang district, prompting local residents to storm the Aalo women’s police station and vandalise it, an officer said on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Nyummar Bagra, 48, a resident of Higi Bagra village, was discovered hanging in custody on Tuesday night.
Bagra had been detained earlier in the day by the Aalo women’s police station for questioning in connection with a rape case. During his initial interrogation, he insisted he was innocent and claimed he had been framed, police sources said.

West Siang Superintendent of Police Kardak Riba confirmed that an inquest and post-mortem examination had been carried out but declined to provide further details.
The incident has triggered anger in the district, with family members and supporters alleging foul play in Bagra’s death. On Wednesday morning, hundreds of people stormed the women’s police station and vandalised the premises.
A police vehicle was also damaged during the unrest, officials added.
