Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described Meghalaya as a “blueprint for a resilient and self-reliant India”, lending strong words of support to the state's development trajectory following Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s four-day visit earlier this month.

Modi’s remark came in response to a post from his office on platform X, highlighting Sitharaman’s observations of the hill state’s community-driven progress. The Prime Minister’s Office noted that Meghalaya had achieved “remarkable transformation driven by tourism, youth empowerment, women-led SHGs, initiatives like the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Vibrant Village Programme and more.”

“With strong government support and vibrant community spirit, the state stands as a blueprint for a resilient and self-reliant India,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated.

Sitharaman, who toured Meghalaya between 10 and 13 July, documented her insights in a signed article for a national daily, where she emphasised the state's “inclusive development” rooted in grassroots participation, particularly among women and youth.

“I was deeply moved by the optimism, determination, and the deep connection with nature that defines the people of Meghalaya,” she wrote. “With community spirit and government support working hand-in-hand, Meghalaya today embodies the vision of a confident and self-reliant India. Till next time, Khublei Shibun and Mithela Meghalaya!”

During her visit, the Finance Minister reviewed local enterprises and government-backed projects that promote sustainable energy, livelihood security, and tourism. Her tour included interactions with women-led self-help groups and youth collectives contributing to the state’s growth.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma shared the appreciation online, reaffirming his government’s ambition to scale the state’s economy to USD 1 billion by 2028.

Meghalaya has been increasingly cited by the Centre as an emerging model for regional development through participatory governance and sustainable community initiatives.
