A coordinated search operation is currently underway in Meghalaya to trace Puskas Zsolt, a Hungarian tourist who has been missing since March 29. The search effort involves the Meghalaya Police, rescue teams, home guards, and local residents, as authorities expand their efforts across challenging terrain in the East Khasi Hills district.
According to police, Zsolt was last seen near Mawkawir and Ramdait, as confirmed by local villagers. “The Hungarian Embassy lodged a missing person complaint with local authorities on April 2, prompting an intensive search operation,” said a police officer.
East Khasi Hills superintendent of police, Vivek Syiem, said that Zsolt had checked into a hotel in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, at approximately 3:45 am on March 29. Later that morning, around 9 am, he left the hotel and hired a taxi, which dropped him off at Mawsahew, near Sohra (Cherrapunjee). “From there, Zsolt reportedly began a solo trek through Mawkawir, intending to reach Nongriat, a popular trekking destination,” said Syiem.
Since his departure, no communication has been made with Zsolt, raising growing concerns about his safety.
In response, authorities have launched an extensive search operation, deploying drones and ground teams to comb through dense forests, caves and remote paths. The Mawkawir Cave and trekking routes leading to Nongriat have been thoroughly searched, but so far, no trace of the missing tourist has been found.
“The search operation is ongoing,” Syiem said, adding that efforts are being intensified each day. The authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Zsolt’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in the search.
