The Union Home Ministry launched a mobile app on Friday, enabling eligible individuals to apply for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, officials reported.
The mobile application, named 'CAA-2019,' allows users to submit applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or accessed through the website indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in, according to a spokesperson from the home ministry.
"The ‘CAA-2019’ Mobile App for making applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 becomes operational," the spokesperson stated.
Earlier, the home ministry had introduced a portal for eligible individuals to apply for Indian citizenship under the CAA.
The rules for implementing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act were notified on Monday, clearing the path for granting citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
Following the issuance of the CAA rules, the Narendra Modi government will commence the process of granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from the aforementioned countries who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. This includes Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians.
