The first amrit snan of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering, takes place today in Prayagraj on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti. This sacred dip is believed to wash away sins and guide devotees on the path to salvation, making it a key highlight of this month-long event.
Celestial significance of Maha Kumbh Prayagraj
Held every 12 years, this year’s Maha Kumbh is considered especially significant due to rare celestial alignments occurring after 144 years, as noted by religious leaders. The event is deeply rooted in India’s ancient spiritual and cultural traditions.
Participation of 13 Akharas in the Amrit Snan
Thirteen Akharas, or Hindu monastic orders, are participating in the amrit snan, following a detailed schedule for their ritual baths. The sequence is designed to ensure smooth coordination and allow each Akhara ample time for their holy dip.
The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government estimates that over 35 crore devotees will visit Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13 and will conclude on February 26, coinciding with Maha Shivratri. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the Mela as a grand celebration of India’s heritage.
