Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi said that strict action would be taken against content that mocks or demeans women on social media platforms, including stand-up comedy and memes.
“Serious cognisance will be taken if women are mocked on any comedy shows on social media or in stand-up comedy, henceforth,” the minister said while addressing the media during her visit to Indore to review the functioning of the Women and Child Development Department.
She emphasised that discriminatory content targeting women on the basis of gender or ridiculing their roles in society would be treated as a punishable offence. “Our officials will be closely scrutinising all social media platforms, including comedy memes and videos, that attempt to show women in a poor light, belittle them, or highlight inequalities,” she said, adding that provisions for punishment are being put in place.
Devi said that legal action may be initiated against those found violating such norms. “If necessary, legal action is also taken against the offenders,” she added.
During her visit, the minister inspected the Institute of Women and Child Development Department located in Gomatgiri. She highlighted the importance of empowering women and girls by providing them opportunities across sectors.
“We need constructive debates and discussions, and I believe they are taking place across society and on social media platforms. Everyone has a responsible role to play in today’s context,” she said.
Responding to questions on issues such as the age of marriage and emerging social realities like live-in relationships, Devi stressed the need for greater awareness. “There are laws, but society is changing. We must engage with all stakeholders, especially the youth, to understand and address these sensitive issues,” she said.
She also elaborated on various government initiatives, including Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti, aimed at improving the welfare of women and children. The minister noted that the institute plays a crucial role in training personnel from across the country, including those associated with over 14 lakh Anganwadi centres.
“Officials and trainers from several states visit here for training, which helps in effectively implementing welfare schemes. The government is particularly focused on the overall development of children aged 0 to 6 years, in line with the vision of a developed India,” she said.
Devi added that over the past 12 years, multiple schemes and policies have been implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support women, youth, and underprivileged sections of society.
“The aim of the government is to ensure that these schemes reach those who need them the most,” she said.
