Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared on his first-ever podcast with entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath on Friday, discussing several important topics, including the 2002 Godhra riots and the United States’ denial of a visa to him in 2005.
In the Nikhil Kamath podcast, PM Modi shared his emotions surrounding the tragic Godhra incident. He explained that on February 24, 2002, he became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time, and just three days later, the Godhra train attack took place.
He recalled receiving reports of a fire in the train, followed by news of casualties. Despite being new to the role, Modi wanted to visit Godhra immediately. He described how, after some challenges, he managed to get a helicopter to take him there, but he had to assume responsibility for the trip.
When he arrived in Godhra, he witnessed the heartbreaking sight of dead bodies. “I felt everything, but I knew I had to control my emotions because I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat,” Modi said, emphasising the importance of staying composed during such a crisis.
PM Modi also remembered the time when the United States denied him a visa in 2005.
"I had been an MLA when the U.S. government refused me a visa. Personally, going to America was not a big deal, but as a representative of my elected government, I felt disrespected. I held a press conference and stated that one day, the world would stand in line for Indian visas,” he recalled.
He also pointed out how, in 2025, India’s global influence has grown significantly.
The Prime Minister explained that the world trusts India because the country speaks clearly and honestly on global issues. He emphasised that India’s stance is transparent, stating that even in times of crisis, India maintains its commitment to peace.
"We do not engage in duplicity. I’ve been clear with countries like Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Palestine, and Israel, expressing support for peace,” he said.
Modi also shared a memorable story about Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Gujarat. When Xi visited India, he expressed interest in seeing Modi’s hometown, Vadnagar.
He explained that the Chinese philosopher Hiuen Tsang had lived there for a long time and had a special connection to both villages.
