Red Alert in Mumbai Today: Several areas of Mumbai and its suburbs are waterlogged due to continuous downpour since Tuesday morning.

News Arena Network - Mumbai - UPDATED: August 19, 2025, 12:08 PM - 2 min read

A vehicle wades through a waterlogged road amid rainfall, in Hindamata area, in Mumbai, in Tuesday.

Due to heavy rainfall, all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai remained closed on Tuesday, a decision announced by the city's civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The BMC also requested that private offices in the city allow their employees to work from home on Tuesday, citing the continuous heavy rain that has been lashing the city since early morning. In a post on X, the BMC stated, “All government and semi-government offices in Mumbai will remain closed today. Private offices/establishments are requested to instruct their employees to work from home.”

The civic body clarified that all essential services would continue to operate as normal. The decision to close offices was made in response to a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Mumbai, which forecasts extremely heavy rainfall throughout the day.

The BMC, acting in its capacity as the District Disaster Management Authority, explained the closure, stating, “In this context, except for essential services, all government, semi-government offices, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation offices in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area have been declared closed today.”

The BMC further appealed to all private offices and establishments within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to 'urgently' instruct their employees to work from home to avoid unnecessary travel, depending on the nature of their work.

The continuous downpour since Tuesday morning has resulted in waterlogging in several parts of the city and its suburbs. Early morning visuals depicted commuters struggling to navigate through flooded roads in areas such as Atal Setu, Kopar, and Chembur. In addition to the office closures, all schools and colleges in the city and its suburbs were also closed on Tuesday due to the extreme weather conditions.
