President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth centenary at the 'Sadaiv Atal' memorial on Wednesday.
The solemn prayer ceremony in New Delhi witnessed the presence of Union ministers Amit Shah and J P Nadda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and leaders of BJP allies, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, JD(U)’s Lalan Singh, and HAM(S)’s Jitan Ram Manjhi.
Kharge and Nadda, along with several parliamentarians and ministers, also visited the Samvidhan Sadan, the renamed Central Hall of the old Parliament building, to offer floral tributes to Vajpayee’s portrait.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and members of Vajpayee's adopted family attended the Sadaiv Atal ceremony.
Prime Minister Modi, in a post on X, remarked, “The impact of how Vajpayee preserved constitutional values and gave a new direction and momentum to the country will remain forever.”
The BJP honoured Vajpayee’s legacy with nationwide events. Union ministers, MPs, and organisational leaders joined commemorative programmes across the country.
In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised Vajpayee’s contributions to good governance.
He said, “A sense of security is essential for good governance, and my government follows a policy of zero tolerance for crime, criminals, corruption, and corrupt people. Vajpayee strengthened the foundation of good governance during his tenure.”
Union minister Nitin Gadkari, speaking at an event in Nagpur, Vajpayee's Lok Sabha constituency, lauded the late leader’s role in driving India’s development and reforms.
