Nation celebrates 22 years of Tribal Commission's work

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes marked its 22nd Foundation Day with a celebration that highlighted its continued efforts in safeguarding tribal rights and promoting development.

Tribal Commission marks 22 years with key achievements.


The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes marked its 22nd Foundation Day with a celebration that highlighted its continued efforts in safeguarding tribal rights and promoting development.

 

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram lauded the Commission’s proactive initiatives, particularly its role in implementing and monitoring the Forest Rights Act through its constitutional powers.

 

Speaking at the event, Oram reaffirmed the commitment of the Tribal Ministry to work in collaboration with the Commission to ensure a dignified life, social justice and holistic development for Scheduled Tribe communities.

 

He emphasised key government initiatives, including the Eklavya Model Residential Schools, pre- and post-matric scholarships, and the National Overseas Scholarship.

 

He also highlighted the identification of 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) across the country as part of a specialised development plan.

 

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Antar Singh Arya, provided an overview of the Commission’s ongoing activities.

 

He noted that since taking office, the current Commission has been actively engaging with Scheduled Tribe communities nationwide.

 

As part of this outreach, the Commission implemented a 100-day action plan to review the progress of various states, districts, and public sector undertakings.

 

Arya reiterated the Commission’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of Scheduled Tribes and ensuring their socio-economic advancement.

 

He detailed the Commission’s achievements and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing tribal concerns at both state and national levels.

 

Commission members Nirupam Chakma, Asha Lakra, and Jatothu Hussain also addressed the gathering, sharing their experiences and perspectives.

 

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes, and Vaddepally Ramchander, Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.

 

Other notable attendees included chairpersons, members, and secretaries of various national commissions, representatives of Scheduled Tribe communities, and university students.

 

The event began with an inaugural session where Puneet Kumar Goel, Secretary of the Commission, welcomed the guests and provided an overview of the Commission’s key activities, successful cases, and its broader objectives.

 

Various sessions followed, focusing on tribal community progress, development, skill enhancement, and entrepreneurship.

 

Experts from the National Skill Development Corporation, academicians from Delhi University, and policymakers shared their insights during these sessions, discussing ways to enhance opportunities for Scheduled Tribe communities.

 

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Amit Nirmal, Joint Secretary of the Commission.
