Taking cognisance of the brutal murder of five members of a tribal family in Purnia, Bihar, on 6 July, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has sought a report from the Bihar government within three days.

Commission member Asha Lakra posted on her social media account that the Commission has requested a report from the Bihar government in the matter within three days.

On 6 July, five members of a family belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community were burnt to death following a dispute in Purnia district.

Police officials stated that there are 23 accused in the case. An FIR has been registered against 150–200 unidentified individuals, and the main accused has been arrested.

They further said that raids are being conducted in connection with the case, and three individuals have been detained, including a minor. According to local residents, the killings were allegedly linked to accusations of black magic and witchcraft.

According to available information, the son of one Ramdev Oraon from a village died during an exorcism ritual, and the health of his other son was deteriorating. Following the death, the villagers allegedly targeted a family, accusing a woman of being responsible.
