During a parliamentary meeting of the NDA in New Delhi on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked opposition parties to support the NDA's Vice Presidential candidate, CP Radhakrishnan.
The Prime Minister's appeal is aimed at ensuring the new Rajya Sabha chairman is elected without a contest. He also stated that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in continuous discussions with leaders from all parties to this end.
Several union ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) arrived to the Parliament Library building for an alliance parliamentary meeting and to congratulate CP Radhakrishnan, the coalition's vice presidential candidate.
Radkhakrishnan also arrived at the Parliament library building, being greeted by Union Minister Piyush Goyal and other leaders ahead of the meeting. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP National President JP Nadda, Union Ministers Jitendra Singh, Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, L Murgann, BJP MPs Sambit Patra, Subhash Barala among others arrived at the building too.
On Monday the NDA leaders held an introductory meeting with floor leaders. Parliamentary Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju also expressed hope for consensus across political parties Radhakrishnan.
"Today NDA Vice-Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan arrived in Delhi and we had an introductory meeting with NDA floor leaders...We feel very proud that a person like CP Radhakrishnan has been named as the NDA Vice-Presidential candidate. All the leaders of the NDA alliance thanked PM Modi...We are hopeful that all the parties will extend support to him," Rijiju told reporters here.
The National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for Vice President, CP Radhakrishnan, is scheduled to file his nomination papers on August 20 at 11 am. About 160 members, including 20 who will propose his name and 20 who will support it, are expected to be there. The election for the Vice President will take place on September 9.
A meeting of NDA leaders was held at Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's home where they officially announced Radhakrishnan as their candidate. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi said the decision was agreed upon by everyone, and all the leaders promised to support him.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be in charge of Radhakrishnan's campaign, and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju will be his election agent.
Radhakrishnan is highly experienced. He has served as a Member of Parliament and as the Governor of states like Jharkhand and Telangana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Radhakrishnan for his dedication, humility, and intelligence, mentioning his work with people at the local level in Tamil Nadu.
The NDA is hoping that Radhakrishnan will be elected without any opposition. The BJP President, JP Nadda, has been contacting leaders from other parties to ask for their support. The party's decision to choose Radhakrishnan is seen as a clever move, especially because of the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu.
The rules for the Vice Presidential election are found in Articles 64 to 68 of the Constitution. The Election Commission officially announces the election according to the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act of 1952. According to Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice President is elected using a system called proportional representation with a single transferable vote, and the voting is done by secret ballot.
