The BJP-led alliance retained its power in major states in the country in the 2024 by-elections, gaining seats across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Assam.

The ruling parties in most states held firm in the assembly by-elections held across India, with the BJP and its allies securing gains in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) dominated in West Bengal.

Out of the 46 seats where by-elections were contested, the BJP-led alliance won 26, marking a gain of nine seats from previous results.

The Congress, in contrast, won seven, a loss of six seats, while the TMC secured six, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won three, and the Samajwadi Party claimed two.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala and the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) in Rajasthan secured one seat each. In Sikkim, two seats were won unopposed by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).

The by-polls also saw Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi score her maiden victory from Wayanad, Kerala, winning with a margin of over 4.1 lakh votes against the CPI(M)-led LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri.

However, the party lost the Nanded seat in Maharashtra to the BJP.

In Uttar Pradesh, the ruling BJP-led alliance claimed seven out of nine contested seats. The BJP retained four seats—Ghaziabad, Khair, Majhawan, and Phulpur—and wrested two from the Samajwadi Party (SP), Katehari and Kundarki.

The SP managed to retain Sishamau and Karhal. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the victory as a reflection of the people’s confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

"This victory is the result of the security, good governance, and public welfare policies of the double-engine government and the tireless hard work of dedicated workers," Adityanath said on X.

The BJP also emerged victorious in Rajasthan, winning five of the seven seats, including three from Congress and one from the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP).

The Bharat Adivasi Party and Congress retained one seat each.

In Punjab, the AAP secured a win in Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, and Chabbewal, defeating the Congress, which retained Barnala.

The ruling NDA in Bihar swept the bypolls in four assembly segments, retaining Imamganj (Hindustani Awam Morcha) and wresting Tarari (BJP), Ramgarh (BJP), and Belaganj (JD(U)) from the INDIA bloc, a boost ahead of the 2025 assembly elections.

West Bengal’s ruling TMC swept the by-polls, winning five seats, and wrested Madarihat from the BJP, solidifying its political dominance in the state.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude, saying, "Your blessings will help us work for the people in the coming days."

The National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya also gained a boost, with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s wife, Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma, winning the Gambegre seat from Congress.

In Karnataka, the Congress retained all three contested assembly seats, including one from the BJP and its ally JD(S). In Kerala, the Congress maintained its hold on Palakkad, while the LDF retained Chelakkara.

The BJP, along with its allies AGP and UPPL, won all five assembly constituencies in Assam.  The BJP retained Behali and Dholai, while it wrested Samaguri from Congress.

In Gujarat, the BJP claimed the Vav seat from Congress, while in Chhattisgarh, it retained the Raipur City South seat.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP retained Budhni but faced a setback in Vijaypur, where Congress managed to retain the seat, despite BJP's Ramniwas Rawat contesting after switching from Congress.

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha candidates Aditya Golay and Satish Chandra Rai were elected unopposed in Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Singhithang constituencies.
