Medical student Nisar Alam, who was detained by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday in connection with the Red Fort blast case, was released on Saturday afternoon after extensive questioning. His family confirmed the development, saying he was given a clean chit following interrogation.

Nisar’s uncle, Abul Kashem, stated that the arrest stemmed from a single phone conversation Nisar had a year ago with an individual currently accused in the Red Fort blast case. “Based on that contact, the NIA picked him up and took him for questioning. They called his father and handed him over. He has never been involved in anything immoral. He has always been a good boy,” Kashem said.

The NIA detained Nisar Alam from Suryapur Bazar in North Dinajpur on Friday morning, as part of the agency’s expanding investigation into the Monday blast near the Red Fort, which claimed 12 lives.

Nisar, an MBBS student at Al-Falah University in Haryana, had returned to his ancestral village Konal, under Dalkhola police station, to attend a relative’s wedding. Although his family has long lived in Ludhiana, Punjab, he was visiting the village with his mother and sister at the time of the arrest.

Following the blast, the NIA contacted Nisar’s father, Towhid Alam, in Ludhiana. Upon learning that Nisar was in North Dinajpur, a special team initiated a swift operation. Surveillance began late Thursday night in the Suryapur Bazaar area, guided by mobile tower tracking. By Friday morning, investigators intercepted Nisar near Suryapur High School.

He was first taken to Islampur, and later transferred to Siliguri for detailed interrogation. During this period, Nisar reportedly managed to call his mother twice—once immediately after his detention, and again before being moved to Siliguri.

This is not the first time individuals associated with Al-Falah University have come under the NIA’s scanner in the Red Fort blast case. Earlier, three doctors from the university were arrested as part of the probe, raising concerns about possible nexus.

Despite this, Nisar’s neighbours and relatives insist he had no role in any wrongdoing.

“He is calm and polite. He only focused on his studies. We never imagined something like this,” said his uncle.

Residents of Konal village, shocked by Nisar’s detention, had been anxiously awaiting his return. News of his release brought relief to the family and the local residents.

The explosion near the historic Red Fort on Monday, which killed 12 people, has triggered a nationwide investigation. The NIA has detained several suspects across India as it attempts to piece together the network behind the attack.
