Northeast pays tribute to visionary leader Manmohan Singh

States across India's northeast have declared a seven-day state mourning to honour former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away at AIIMS Delhi. A stalwart of Indian politics and architect of economic reforms, Dr Singh’s demise has drawn condolences from northeastern leaders lauding his significant contributions to the region and the nation.

Tribute being paid to former Indian PM Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday.


The nation mourns the passing of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who breathed his last on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Dr Singh, aged 92, was regarded as the architect of India’s economic liberalisation and served as the country’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.


In homage to the eminent leader, the Assam government has declared a seven-day state mourning from 26 December to 1 January.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision, stating, “As a mark of respect to Dr Manmohan Singh Ji, former Prime Minister of India, Government of Assam will observe a period of 7-day state mourning... During this period, the national flag will fly at half mast at all state government establishments, and all official entertainment programmes are cancelled.”

 

Dr Singh had a unique connection with Assam, having represented the state in the Rajya Sabha for five consecutive terms from 1991 to 2019.

He resided in Guwahati during this tenure in a ground-floor apartment owned by the late Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia.

The Saikia family, including Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, expressed their sorrow.

“Dr Singh’s contributions to Assam and India at large will remain etched in our memories,” said Saikia, who is en route to Delhi to pay his respects.

Condolences pour in

Chief Ministers and political leaders from across the northeastern states conveyed their condolences.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang hailed Dr Singh as a “visionary leader” whose contributions to India’s economic reforms have left an indelible mark.

Recalling Dr Singh’s visit to Sikkim after the 2011 earthquake, Tamang emphasised the relief package of ₹1,000 crore that brought solace to the state.

In a post on X, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his sorrow over the passing of Dr Manmohan Singh, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India.

 

He was a visionary leader, and his dedication to the nation has left an indelible mark on our country.”

 

He further added, “My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones in this time of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

 

State Congress president Keisham Meghachandra also conveyed his condolences on the demise of the former prime minister.

 

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described Dr Singh as a “humble visionary” who played a pivotal role in India’s economic growth.

He remarked, “His legacy of calm leadership, wisdom, and humility will be remembered.” Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton and T R Zeliang also paid glowing tributes, terming him a “distinguished statesman” and “architect of India’s economic reforms.”

In Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd) commended Dr Singh’s instrumental role in developmental projects, such as the Trans-Arunachal Highway and the Pare and Dibang power projects.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu lauded the former Prime Minister’s economic vision, stating, “His phenomenal contributions to economic reforms laid the foundation of a vibrant and resilient India.”

 

 

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein added that Dr Singh’s progressive policies would be remembered for generations.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma called Dr Singh’s demise a “huge loss to the nation,” stating, “India will always cherish and take inspiration from his contributions.”


Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha echoed similar sentiments, lauding his legacy of economic reform and governance.

 

The Tipra Motha Party supremo, Pradyot Kishore Manikya, said, “History will be kinder to you. Your legacy will live on forever.”

End of an era

Dr Singh’s death has been described as the end of an era in Indian politics. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant economic reforms and a focus on inclusive growth. Known for his humility and erudition, Dr Singh was one of India’s most respected statesmen.


Survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur, and three daughters, Dr Singh’s contributions will continue to inspire generations.
