Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil said on Friday that the government has created a detailed plan to stop the flow of Indian river water to Pakistan. This decision was made after a key meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He said that the government is working on short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions. One of the first steps will be desilting rivers so that water can be diverted.
“Three options were discussed with Home Minister Amit Shah. The goal is to ensure that not even a single drop of water flows into Pakistan,” Paatil told the media. This move follows a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which has increased tensions.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also spoke out against the Indus Water Treaty, which was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. He called it the “most unfair document” for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said, “The Government of India has taken some steps, but we in J-K have always believed that the Indus Water Treaty is unfair to us.”
Omar Abdullah also said that Home Minister Amit Shah has promised to ensure the safety of people from Jammu and Kashmir living in other parts of India.
“It is unfortunate that the attack happened. We raised all the concerns in the meeting. The Home Minister assured us that all necessary steps will be taken. An advisory will be issued, and the Home Minister has also spoken to Chief Ministers of other states,” he said.
Earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Security, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. This suspension will continue until Pakistan stops supporting cross-border terrorism and closes the integrated Attari Check Post.
