The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in Gujarat, governed by the BJP, has served a notice to former Indian cricketer and newly elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP from Baharampur, Yusuf Pathan, for allegedly encroaching on a piece of land claimed by the civic body.
The notice, dated June 6, was disclosed to the media by VMC's standing committee chairman, Shital Mistry, following concerns raised by former BJP corporator Vijay Pawar.
Pawar alleged that despite the state government rejecting VMC's proposal to sell the plot to Pathan in 2012, the MP had encroached upon it by constructing a compound wall.
"In 2012, Pathan had requested this plot in the Tanadalja area under TP 22 from VMC, adjacent to his under-construction house, offering nearly ₹57,000 per square meter," Pawar stated.
Although VMC approved the proposal at the time, the state government did not grant approval, Pawar added.
"Despite the proposal being rejected, no fencing was erected around the plot. Later, it was discovered that Pathan had encroached upon the land by building a compound wall. Hence, I have urged the municipal corporation to conduct an inquiry," Pawar stated.
Confirming the events, Mistry stated that a notice had been served to Pathan on June 6, instructing him to remove all encroachments, with further action to be decided after a couple of weeks.
Mistry claimed that the land belongs to VMC, and they intend to reclaim it
